From a private collection in Colombia.
Edgar Negret believed that mechanical forms free of function acquired a magical quality; his 1957 series ?Aparatos Mágicos? (?Magical Apparatuses?) comprised mechanical items that had no specific purpose, and would come to be the defining representation of his practice. He was also known for combining images of industrial structures with those observed from nature in his geometric abstract sculptures. Early in his career, he met Spanish sculptor Jorge de Oteiza, who was a major influence in his work. Negret began to work with metal, his most commonly used medium, while studying in New York?s Clay Club Center (today the Sculpture Center); in the same period he met
    Louise Nevelson
    and
    Ellsworth Kelly
, who became major influences on his practice.
    ABOUT HIS LIFE
(Edgar Negret Dueñas, Popayán, Colombia, 1920) Colombian sculptor.
Unanimously considered as the most outstanding representative of modern Colombian sculpture, Edgar Negret transcended with his abstract compositions the borders of his country and assimilated the tendencies of the plastic arts of the 20th century to create a work of singular originality and expressive force.
Son of an aristocratic family (his father was General Negret), he studied in Cali.
In 1946 he made his first solo exhibition and during the fifties he lived in New York, Paris and Madrid.
His work materials were very diverse from the beginning, since they included plaster, ceramics, steel and iron, although later aluminum became the most used.
Gaudí and Brancusi were the artists who most influenced his training.
At the beginning of his career he went through a semi-figurative stage.
It was in the early years of the 1950s when he began to make abstract sculptural sets as his series Magical apparatuses, constructions made with occasional moving metal pieces, in which the modern and complex industrial technology was evoked.
In his creations, the assembling of plates and colored bars was acquired predominantly and fixed by means of screws and nuts.
His original style and creative technique set him up as one of the great sculptors of the 20th century in Latin America.
Negret exhibited his works at the International Exposition of Pittsburgh, the XXX Venice Biennial of 1960 and the biennales of São Paulo in 1957 and 1965, among other contests.
Among his works include The head of the poet Valencia (1944), Temple (1970), Negret and navigator no.
    2 (1974), Dynamism (1974), Vigilantes (1978), Totem (1978) and Metamorphosis (1982).
In his last stage he introduced in his work strident colors inspired by Inca motifs, as in the Muros del Cuzco series (Casa Negret, 1990).
